How do I connect my local server to the leitzcloud?

In the leitzcloud, you have the option to install our Sync Tool on your server to access your data outside of the network. The benefits of this function are:

  • You can keep existing folder structure while syncing it to the leitzcloud.
  • Users that have subscribed to the synchronized folders can access the leitzcloud outside of the office.
  • VPN or FTP access is no longer necessary to access files.
  • You can perform file-based backups of your file server.

Tips:

  • Choose to receive a notification when a device that has been added to the synchronization becomes unavailable. This way, you stay informed about the synchronization status at all times.
  • Be careful with reorganizing your organization or sub-organizations structure while file server mapping is active. Connections may become corrupted when Team Shares are moved.
  • If you want to connect to a server via a computer, we recommend that you register a non-used user in the Sync Tool. This account must not be invited to the Team Shares and should be identified by a unique identifier, you can for example name it File Server.

System constraints

For the Sync Tool there are four system constraints to ensure a permanent and secure synchronization:

  1. As soon as one main folder is mapped, additional sub-folders can be mapped.
  2. A folder can not be assigned to multiple user accounts or Team Shares
  3. Two folders can not store the comtentof the same user account or Team Share.
  4. Mapped main folders, including their sub-folders and files, require the system user name to have the NTFS permissions "Read and Execute”, “List Folder Contents” and “Read or Access Control" for the synchronization to be successful.

Please note: For the third constraint we suggest you create a dummy or test account with which credentials you register the Sync Tool on the file server. Do NOT add the dummy resp. test account to the Team Share, so that all user accounts and Team Shares can me mapped.

Let’s get your local server ready!

Install the Sync Tool with the system administrator or another user, that has full authorization, on your local server.

Also make sure that the main folder you want to assign, including its sub-folders and files, has a system user name with full access.

Register the Sync Tool with an administrator of the main organization in the leitzcloud. This administrator is exclusively made for creating the connection between the Sync Tool and the leitzcloud and not for Team Shares or other Sync Tool registers. To avoid confusion, we suggest naming that administrator account “File Server” or something similar.

The Sync Tool establishes a SSL connection (Port 443) with blowfish encryption to the leitzcloud.

How to start with the mapping

Now that the Sync Tool is registered, the device that it is registered on is listed under “Machines” in the leitzcloud organization. Click on the device that you want to connect the leitzcloud with and the option “Assign folder” becomes visible. Click on that option and a window showing the folder structure on your local device will appear.

Select the folder you want to assign and another window appear with existing accounts and Team Shares on your leitzcloud. You can select one of the options and the folder on your local computer will be shared with it.

Once you submit this form, all mapped folders will start syncing all files of that user or Team Share. All files that are already in the folder on the local server will be synced to the leitzcloud for that user or Team Share.

Please note: As soon as a main folder on your local device is assigned to an user account or a Team Share, the Team Share or account will not be available for further mapping anymore. That means you can not map Team Shares and accounts to more than one main folder on your device (see “System constraints” above).

The folder on the local server shows if the synchronization was successful.
